Fence Panel Quantity Calculator
Calculate the number of fence panels needed for your fencing project, accounting for gates, corners, and waste.
Fill in the fields above and click Calculate.
Formula
Net Fenceable Length = Total Fence Length − (Number of Gates × Gate Width)
Base Panels = ⌈ Net Fenceable Length ÷ Panel Width ⌉
Total Panels to Order = ⌈ Base Panels × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100) ⌉
Posts Needed = Total Panels + 1 (for a straight run with no corners)
Assumptions & References
- Standard fence panels are commonly available in 6 ft or 8 ft widths; the default is 8 ft.
- Gate openings are subtracted from the total fence length before calculating panels.
- Ceiling (round-up) division is used so you never under-order panels.
- A 5% waste allowance is recommended as a default to account for cuts, damaged panels, and slight measurement errors.
- Post count assumes a simple straight-line fence. Add 1 extra post per corner or change of direction.
- This calculator does not account for post diameter; for precision, subtract post widths from net length.
- Always verify local building codes and HOA regulations for fence height, setback, and permit requirements.
